Fall doesn’t mean the end of road construction in West Kelowna.

Instead, a major project is pending.

Beginning in the week of September 13th, the crews will commence underground and above-ground installation work for the construction of a new roundabout at the Shannon Lake-Bartley-Stevens intersection. Construction is expected to continue through December 2021, depending on weather conditions and other factors.

The $ 6.15 million intersection improvement and active transportation project is funded in part by provincial and federal grants, as well as road construction fees.

This week the crews began mobilizing in the northeast part of the intersection to prepare for the work ahead.

During the site mobilization and construction, all businesses in the area will remain open and digital signage will be placed along the main routes to help motorists navigate to these destinations.

More information on diversion routes, changes in traffic patterns and intersection closures will be announced at the start of construction. The City of West Kelowna will notify the public of any intersections being closed.

Phase 1 of the project includes the laying of overground and underground utilities, the construction of a retaining wall and parts of the new roundabout at the Shannon Lake-Bartley-Stevens intersection.

Phase 2 of active traffic improvements on Shannon Lake Road is expected to begin next year. Modernizations include completing the roundabout and building sidewalks and bike paths east of Dominion Road to Westlake Road.

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2022.
