The city of West Kelowna has suspended forest fire containment measures so residents can hit the trails for this long weekend.

Mount Boucherie will be fully open to recreational users during the three-day long Victoria Day weekend.

The crews will work near Mount Boucherie Secondary School and the city’s arenas and ball fields.

The crews will continue their work after the long weekend on the north slopes east of Royal LePage Place and Jim Lind Arena.

The city says hiking trails and the access stairs east of the parking lot will be temporarily closed over the next two weeks.

The forest fire containment efforts on public land are funded by a grant provided by the BC Provincial Community Resilience Improvement Program.

Local residents looking to conduct FireSmart forest fire containment work on their private property may be eligible for grants of up to $ 500.
