Construction of a four-story apartment building in West Kelowna has begun.

According to developer Highstreet, the foundation stone for the net-zero-energy rental complex was laid on Thursday.

City Council members including Mayor Gord Milsom attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Carrington View.

In a press release, Highstreet said the rental property was one of eleven winners in the recent CleanBC Better Buildings competition, which showcased best practices for building design.

Four members of West Kelowna City Council attended the groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, including Mayor Gord Milsom.

The project highlights included 100 percent electricity and CO2-free; 304 solar panels for powering public areas and triple windows.

“Our goal is to own and operate 1,000 net-zero homes by the end of 2024,” said Scott Butler, president of Highstreet.

“We show that today, 12 years before the legal requirement, net zero market rents can be built without the financial end result being different than if the code minimum is adhered to.

“We look forward to building many more Net-Zero-Ready and Net-Zero buildings across Western Canada.”
