Between December 6 and December 12, 34 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Penticton.

A total of 150 cases have been recorded in Penticton since the pandemic began, 50 of which were identified between November 29 and December 5.

More than half – 56 percent – of all Penticton cases were recorded in the past two weeks.

Starting with data from the week of November 29 through December 5, the BC Center for Disease Control (BCCDC) began providing weekly updates to local health areas across the province.

The health areas in the southern Okanagan are divided into Penticton, Keremeos, and the southern Okanagan (Oliver and Osoyoos).

While the numbers in Penticton are down from the previous week, the same cannot be said for cities in other parts of the southern Okanagan.

54 new cases were recorded in the South Okanagan area, including Oliver and Osoyoos. Many of the cases stem from an outbreak at the McKinney Place long-term care home in Oliver.

There have been 57 cases in the nursing home since the outbreak was first reported on December 6th.

A McKinney Place resident died of COVID-19 on December 13.

A new case was recorded in Keremeos between December 6th and 12th. Keremeos also registered a case the week before.

According to Interior Health, they test 700 to 800 people daily in the region’s test centers.

The BCCDC found that the numbers came from a live database. So if you add the weekly updates to the 11 month total, you will not get an accurate count of the total. Cases with missing address information or those outside the province are not assigned.

In Penticton, cases were found in the Village by the Station long-term care home and both high schools.

Across the province, Surrey had the highest number of cases per 100,000 people from December 6-12. The city identified 1,484 new cases last week.

In the Okanagan, most of the cases were observed in the central Okanagan area.

The BC CDC will now publish the number of COVID-19 cases registered in local areas on a weekly basis. This map shows cases recorded in areas across the province from December 6th to December 12th. (BC CDC)
