OPINION

Earlier this fall, Western Investor named Kelowna as the best Western Canadian real estate investment destination for 2018. I couldn’t agree more. If you think of western Canada as a place to invest in real estate for the next 12 months, then Kelowna should be your choice.

Of course, as a real estate agent in Kelowna, I have a vested interest in keeping the local market strong, but I also have a unique insight into what makes Kelowna a great place to invest, especially given my real estate investor background.

Of course, we all know about Kelowna’s superb climate, breathtaking natural beauty, attractions, and amenities, but beyond that, Kelowna living remains relatively affordable, especially when compared to the lower mainland.

I understand that it may seem strange to some locals to refer to Kelowna’s homes as “relatively affordable,” especially given the growth we’ve seen in recent years. However, in their proper context, Kelowna property prices remain very reasonable.

Additionally, the tech sector in Kelowna has exploded in recent years – something that we as tech forward brokers are very aware of.

This means that more and more jobs are becoming available in Kelowna, which is also driving demand. In our region (from Vernon to West Kelowna) the population has increased by 7.4 percent since 2011. I believe the arrival of UBC Okanagan and the emergence of a modern, thriving technology industry has been a real boon to our region.

More new homes were built in Kelowna in 2017 than any other part of the province other than the lower mainland, and I don’t expect demand to decline in 2018. There are a number of places in our area that I expect to see of even greater interest in 2018, including the North End of Kelowna and West Kelowna.
