An early morning fire today destroyed an apartment complex under construction near Glenmore and Union Roads in Kelowna.
The fire broke out before 6 a.m. today, April 6, and was put down around 6:38 a.m., neighbor Lea Ircandia told iNFOnews.ca.
The complex was called Wydham Heights and was two stories with the walls of the third floor arriving yesterday, the complex owner said. He just gave his name as Dave and didn’t want to talk any more about the fire.
“It was about six o’clock when I looked out the window and the flames went so high,” said Mildred Cook. “You can see my siding is starting to buckle from the heat. When I looked out the window it was so hot, the glass was so hot that I couldn’t touch it. ”
Cook lives across from the complex, which is next to Wyndham Park.
Ircandia, who lives in the nearby Wyndham Terrace complex, told neighbors that she turned off her stove before going out to prevent smoke from being drawn into her home.
An RCMP press release said some of the residents near the fire have been evacuated.
From 8 a.m. onwards, firefighters were still pouring water on the smoldering rubble
RCMP waited for the fire to cool and for this crane to be secured before dispatching fire investigators.

By noon the RCMP was still unable to investigate the site.
“We’re still waiting for the entire scene to cool down so we can get our fire investigators to watch this,” said RCMP Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy told iNFOnews.ca. “We’re still holding the scene, waiting for the opportunity to gather evidence
Police also waited to see what steps would need to be taken to secure a construction crane at what Noseworthy has estimated to be an estimated 160 feet high.
