A firefighter was injured and two pets died in a house fire in West Kelowna this morning.
When West Kelowna Fire Rescue arrived at the Ponderosa Road house around 3:00 am, the house was “fully involved,” Fire Chief Jason Brolund said in a press release. Some of the 21 firefighters entered the house to search for people and pets while the rest of the crew attacked the fire from the outside.
The injured firefighter fell through the floor of the house into the basement and was able to save himself, Brolund said. He was taken to hospital for treatment for a knee and back injury. He is home and recovering.
Five people were displaced by the fire and into the hands of emergency services. One pet was found, but two others died.
The cause of the accidental fire was the cooking on the lower level of the house.
