UBCO college students begin petition, name for later bus occasions to Kelowna campuses

A petition created this week is calling for later bus service in certain areas of Kelowna.

Two UBCO students say that some of their fellow students who live in the Qual Ridge area feel unsafe commuting to and from the campus due to a lack of transit service to the neighborhood.

The two students explain that transit service to Quail Ridge from UBCO only runs from 7:15 am to 5:40 pm, Monday to Friday.

<p dir=“Without the bus, they are forced to walk up to 4 km along a high-traffic road or through an unmaintained trail that provides the danger of darkness, animals, and lack of cell service,” explains the petition.

“In order to change the safety of students, we must provide safe alternatives. We believe this can be achieved by altering the bus route to and from Quail Ridge.”

So far the petition has gathered nearly half of the 500 signatures it is requesting.

A few comments on the petition are calling for additional service to Black Mountain while many people say they have had to walk the trail between UBCO and Qual Ridge which can prove “scary” and/or “dangerous” at night.
