A vehicle caught fire just off Highway 97 south of Summerland

A pickup truck caught fire in Summerland just off Highway 97 South Tuesday morning.

The truck was spotted on Lakeshore Drive South and completely engulfed around 9:30 a.m. RCMP closed Lakeshore about 30 yards off Highway 97.

Police say a motorist heading south heard a noise from the vehicle and turned onto Lakeshore Drive, where he parked the truck. It is believed that a mechanical problem has ignited fuel.

The driver and passenger both escaped from the vehicle and were both unharmed.

Three fire engines and seven firefighters were on site and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

A spark from the truck ignited a small patch of grass across the street, but the crews were also able to erase the grass.

Fireman Rob Robinson said an off-duty Abbotsford firefighter at the scene quickly put out the grass fire.

Once they got the truck’s fire under control, firefighters were seen soaking the grass one more time.
