The city of Kelowna has submitted its proposals for the 2020 financial plan to the city council.

This plan provides for a 4.27% increase in property tax.

For the owner of a single family home worth $ 610,000, the increase would mean a tax increase of $ 90.

“Our population is expected to grow by around 50,000 people by 2040,” said the city of Kelowna in a press release.

The tax increase would be used to recruit eight new RCMP officers and six additional “security positions” recommended by city staff.

Kelowna’s budget for 2021 also includes renovation and modernization projects of $ 33.4 million, $ 12.7 million for the development of additional parks and green spaces, $ 1.9 million for new transportation projects, and nearly $ 600,000 for support programs and initiatives to tackle the city’s complex social problems.

The city’s budget for 2020 initially approved a 4.15% increase, but this was reduced to 2.05% due to COVID-19 shutdowns.

The council will be able to approve the provisional tax hike on Thursday 10 December.
