Kelowna RCMP is done with when it comes to provincial public health ordinances.

According to police, the organizer of the “Freedom Rally” received a fine of US $ 2,300 on Saturday for protesting against measures related to COVID-19 in the city center. Witnesses say that around 100 people were present at the protest, which included a march.

RCMP officials attended the event to ensure the safety of the protesters and the general public.

“The people of Canada have a democratic right to lawful and peaceful protest, and the RCMP must exercise discretion in relating a citizen’s rights to the current potential health risks associated with large public gatherings,” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy.

“However, if the activities violate provincial public health regulations, those involved can be fined.”

Despite the fine, the police did not name the organizer of the event.

“Public safety is a priority for the RCMP and we encourage everyone to adhere to the implemented instructions to ensure everyone’s safety and reduce risks. These orders are not optional, ”says Supt. Kara Triance, Kelowna RCMP manager. “As we continue to enforce the regulations at our disposal, we encourage everyone to voluntarily follow provincial health directives so that enforcement is not required.”
