Local residents and tourists alike will soon be able to enjoy more of the beach on Lake Okanagan, as the city of Kelowna announced on Monday that it would purchase a waterfront property in the Mission district.
The 0.89 acre property at 4214 Hobson Road cost $ 4.4 million. The deal was closed on June 1st, although the owner will remain on-site until November 30th. The city said public access will be restricted until then.
“The city is committed to improving public access to waterfront properties along Lake Okanagan, and this acquisition is in a really important place,” Mayor Colin Basran said in a press release. “As Kelowna continues to be an attractive place to live for citizens and a popular tourist destination, it becomes increasingly important to protect valuable waterfront property for parks and public access.”
The city said the property was purchased from the city’s development expense program for the purchase of parkland. The property is adjacent to the Central Okanagan Sailing Association at 4220 Hobson Road and is the newest to join the city’s water network, including the recently acquired Bluebird Park to the north and Sarsons Beach to the south.

“The city’s employees expect the residency to be removed and the property to be vacated in spring 2019 with the aim of making the property accessible to the public as quickly as possible,” said Johannes Saufferer, real estate service provider for the city of Kelowna. “Staff will also work with the Central Okanagan Small Boat Association to ensure that the entire site is developed and used to maximize the public’s access to desirable waterfront services and amenities.”
