A not-for-profit housing association in Kelowna said it was seeing “tremendous demand” for some of its newly opened rental apartments for low and middle income residents.

The residents of the Columbian Centennial Housing Society’s new Columbus Center rental apartment building on Sutherland Avenue moved in last weekend.

The company stated that there was “enormous demand”, especially for one-bedroom units, and that applications would be received after construction began.

Although not all units have officially been rented out, applicants for the remaining units are already being considered.

The province said 24 one-bedroom apartments are renting for $ 950 per month and eight two-bedroom apartments are renting for $ 1,600.

The project also includes four studio units where the rent equals income and ranges from $ 375 to $ 750.

The complex also includes 12 rental housing units that can be rented at market prices, the province said.

She said finding a place in the Okanagan during the pandemic was challenging at her price.

“You could always get things that were much higher and I wasn’t willing to pay for that. It was a bit stressful, ”said Friesen.

“I have to do my daughter credit … she kept me calm and reassured me: ‘You will find a place. ‘I’m so glad we got in here. “

While the opening of the affordable rental complex is welcome news for the city’s mayor, Colin Basran said that much cheaper rental housing is needed in Kelowna.

“There is a significant need for subsidized rental housing in our community. With what the real estate market is doing right now, living is becoming even less accessible for many of our residents, ”said Basran.

“Of course, I want the residents of our community to know that it comes first on the city council, but there are actually very few things the city can do other than try to increase supply.”

Basran says the city’s staff have been working to quickly build new housing projects to expand the offer.
