A fifth grade boy recently had reading and writing problems so his parents enrolled him in Sylvan Learning Kelowna.
The improvement was no less than substantial.
“His reading and writing difficulties were so challenging and frustrating that he often had to take breaks during class to deal with these negative emotions,” said Stefani Goodfellow, director of education at Sylvan Learning Kelowna. “He worked diligently through his program at Sylvan and made tremendous progress.
“He says that he used to make an effort to read, and now he’s just doing it. He doesn’t really have to think about it anymore. He no longer has to take breaks from behavior in class. “
Sylvan Learning has helped transform the lives of millions of families over the past 40 years with proven teaching experience and cutting edge technology. Sylvan helps students of all ages catch up, keep up, or even move forward.
They can also help students learn other skills such as organization, time management, and test-taking skills. Sylvan teachers are well versed in local curricula.
“One young lady who came to us in her tenth grade never asked questions in her math class for fear that other students in the class might judge her,” says Goodfellow. “After building and learning and practicing important basic skills in asking questions, she blossomed in her skills and confidence, saying she no longer finds math scary and is no longer afraid to ask questions in class.”
Those who enroll take the Sylvan Insight Assessment, a combination of standardized tests, diagnostic tools, and face-to-face interviews that set a personalized learning plan in areas such as math, reading, writing, and study skills. The children receive individual tuition in small groups – no more than three students – from qualified teachers.
There are afternoon, evening and Saturday morning classes during the school year and morning and afternoon classes in the summer months. The flexible and inexpensive lessons can take place in person or online.
One adult learner who enrolled with Sylvan to improve her math skills says the teachers’ passion for her was noticed.
“I noticed that while not all children are excited to be there all the time, certainly all of the staff are consistently bright and eager and very encouraging,” she says.
“As I’ve observed, the staff really make an effort to get in touch with their students. This promotes trust and, in turn, the students feel good about being vulnerable and asking for help. “
