The Kelowna RCMP remains at the site of a suspected death in Black Mountain.

The body of a 27-year-old Kelowna man was found Sunday night in the parking lot of a recently opened subsidized housing estate on 1749 Highway 33.

The police are now going from door to door and talking to the residents.

The complex called Margaret’s Landing was built by BC Housing and the Ki-Lo-Na Friendship Society. The $ 13.5 million project was completed in late October and tenants moved last month.

A representative from the building was on site Monday morning to keep media out of the property.

UPDATE 9:40 am

The Kelowna RCMP has confirmed that it is investigating a suspicious death in Black Mountain.

Police were called around 9:15 p.m. Sunday about a disturbance in the 1700 block of Highway 33 in Kelowna. When officers and paramedics arrived, they found a 27-year-old man dead in front of the house.

“The investigation is in the early stages and officers will be in the area indefinitely,” says Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy from the Kelowna RCMP. “This tragic incident appears to be inherently isolated and we do not believe it poses a threat to the general public.”

An adult suspect has been detained in the matter. No fees were charged at this point. The Kelowna RCMP Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation.

The BC Coroners Service has launched its own investigation into the death.

No further information is being released at this time, but the Kelowna RCMP is encouraging anyone who witnesses or has knowledge of this crime to call 250-762-3300 immediately and speak to the police.

ORIGINAL 11.20 p.m.

Police are examining a body found outside a Black Mountain townhouse complex on Sunday evening.

The body was discovered just before 9:45 p.m. behind a parked car in a townhouse complex at 1749 Hwy 33 East next to the Esso gas station.

A white tarpaulin covered the body until the police pitched a walled tent around him.

Local residents report that several police vehicles, ambulances and fire engines were on site.

It is currently unknown if the death was suspect.

The police are likely to release more information on Monday.
