Summerland Township has put in place a rapid approval process for businesses to temporarily use sidewalks, parking stands and streets during the current COVID-19 restrictions.
As of now, businesses can use the quick review process to set up patios to support al fresco dining and enhance the outdoor shopping experience. This quick preliminary review process will be available for the duration of the current public health regulation that restricts eating indoors.
The regulation, which came into force on March 29th at midnight, prohibits indoor eating, but allows take-away and terrace services.

“With the long weekend ahead, the district is focused on addressing the needs of the local business community and is excited to introduce a preliminary, rapid approach to permits,” said Toni Boot, Mayor of Summerland.
“Following our decision in January to waive corporate royalties in 2021, this is yet another example of the Council’s commitment to partnering with our local businesses during these uncertain times.”
Graham Statt, Summerland’s chief administrative officer, said the initiative was the result of collaboration between the community and the business community. He said people in the community asked about outdoor options when the restrictions were announced.
Ron Kubek, president of the Summerland Chamber, said the measures were necessary to support restaurants and pubs during the current restrictions.
“Restaurants operate at the best of times with very low profit margins,” he said, adding that the challenges for restaurants were tremendous during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He added that other communities in the Okanagan have already worked to temporarily allow outdoor terraces.
Armstrong in northern Okanagan already has such a permit policy in place. Vernon has also acted quickly to enable outdoor dining areas, he said.
