A new winery proposed for the northern edge of Kelowna is seeking permission from the city to increase the height of its alcohol production facility.

Azhadi Winery, proposed for Shayler Road in the McKinley Beach neighborhood, would like the extra height to accommodate a vineyard observation structure. The building will be near Okanagan Lake, so the developers believe the extra 10 meters from 9.5 to 19.5 meters won’t detract from the view, as the first floor starts at a relatively low point.

“The differences in height allow these architectural features to be used to create an intimate sanctuary based on the ancient Persian teachings of good thoughts, good deeds, and good words,” said the application letter to the city of Kelowna. “The winery will incorporate organic elements, natural shapes and colors to highlight and complement the land, the sky and the water.

“The architecture and design of the vineyard observation tower are in harmony with sustainable vineyard management and winemaking.”

Azhadi Winery, in its proposal submitted in June, stated that McKinley Beach residents were happy with the proposal.

“The initial feedback from the McKinley Beach Development Group on the winery building was extremely positive and exceeded initial expectations,” says the application.

The file will be reviewed during a Kelowna city council meeting on Tuesday, September 21, and planners will recommend city councils to approve the elevation deviation.
