There are promising signs that the tourism industry in the Thompson-Okanagan is going to bounce back in a big way after the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Fast Facts Tourism Research Summary, which tracks visitor statistics in regions throughout BC, the number of overnight visitors to the Thompson-Okanagan around Family Day was up 48.5% over the same week in 2019, which was more than a year before the pandemic struck.
In fact, the Thompson Okanagan region had the biggest improvement over 2019 of the seven tourism regions during the Family Day week.
The data is based on the movement of mobile devices traveling within BC that have spent one night at least 60 kilometers from its home location.
There were also about 10% more visitors to the Thompson Okanagan during the weeks ending Feb. 27 and March 6 than there were in 2019, although that figure was down 2% compared to 2019 for the week ending March 13.
There have been only three of 11 weeks so far in 2022 when the number of visitors has been down compared to the same weeks in 2019.
