Kelowna’s sports treasure has tied the knot.

Olympic gold medalist Kelsey Serwa married longtime friend and fiancé Stan Rey on Saturday.

The outdoor wedding took place in the Alps at the Big White Ski Resort.

It was a fitting place since her grandfather, the former MLA Cliff Serwa, was one of the founders of the resort, and that’s where Kelsey honed her chops on the ski slope and eventually became an Olympic ski cross champion.

“It was really cool. A couple of my old teammates came back and Big White was the most special venue I could have imagined,” said Kelsey.

“They lit the bullet chair for us, and we had photos above. The ceremony was in the Black Forest.”

Serwa and Rey got engaged in June 2018.

Members of the Olympic team flew to the wedding. The bridal couple then drove off in a vintage VW Beetle convertible.

Around 190 guests attended the ceremony and reception.

“It was really beautiful,” said Kelsey. “Lots of people did it.”

Kelsey ended her last competitive season on a high in April, winning the Canadian Ski Cross Championship at the Sunshine Resort in Banff.

In November, she will be inducted into the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame.

She won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, and silver at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia. Big White’s pride also won a world championship in 2011.

The couple will be honeymooning in Bali, but first Kelsey will complete the school year at UBC Okanagan, where she is working towards her degree in human kinetics.

And not to forget the groom, Stan is a retired racing driver who is now a sponsored Salomon “Big Mountain” skier who appears in movies and magazines.

The couple will continue to live in Kelowna.
