UPDATE: 1:30pm

The Kelowna International Airpot says a significant number of cancellations are due to airplanes not being able to land at YLW.

“Today we have a north wind and poor visibility and those two components combined make it difficult for aircraft to land because there is not enough visibility right now to land from the south,” said Phillip Elchitz, senior manager of airport operations.

Only certain types of aircraft can land.

“We are seeing some airlines be able to land, but the majority of airlines are not able to land because there is not enough visibility,” Elchitz added.

YLW expects operations will be back to normal by Tuesday morning.

“The weather forecast calls for an improving trend and we feel that by later this evening or tomorrow morning we will have clear skies and we will be back to regular operations.”

Snow and low visibility is again causing delays at the Kelowna International Airport.

Flights on multiple airlines with destinations to Alberta, Vancouver Island and Vancouver were canceled this morning while others saw delays.

Kelowna’s airport is unable to land planes when visibility falls below 3/8 of a mile.

Cancellations and delays this morning are likely to cascade into further delays and cancellations throughout the day, so anyone using YLW today is encouraged to check their flight status.
