The new Sicamous Eagles coach takes one game at a time.
Eagles President Sheila Devost announced Jan. 11 that the organization had hired a new bank chief, Nick Deschenes. The Eagles won their first game under Deschenes 4-1, their second 6-4, their third 6-3. At press time, the team continued that three-game winning streak into the Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 games against Summerland and 100 Mile House.
In a Jan. 21 interview, Deschenes was quick to credit his players for the recent victories. He said it’s not difficult to motivate a group that knows their record – then 9-18-2 – doesn’t reflect their ability.
“There is a good core of players,” he said. “I come in and provide a bit of structure and consistency and they responded well to that.”
Deschenes has previously coached in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and has led the Grand Forks Border Bruins and most recently the Summerland Steam. He steered Steam to a 4-1 start to the 2021-22 season before mutually parting ways with the organization. He was also the coach of the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Hockey League.
He brings around 10 years of experience as a junior hockey coach and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to lead the Eagles.
“We’re going ahead and tackling day by day, trying to do things a little better and end the season on a positive note,” said Deschenes.
Deschenes cerebrally describes his coaching style, adding that he likes to analyze the game and enjoy all its subtleties. He’s a demanding coach and firm, but over time he said he’s changing.
“A different approach is needed here because like those players, I really got a second chance to get back into the game and those players got a second chance to get a new coach and a different direction,” he said.
“We’re all working together to make the most of our season.”
Deschenes believes there is something special about junior hockey in small communities that can provide meaning and identity. In Grand Forks, Deschenes said he saw this firsthand and realized the importance of having a team that embodies positive traits like work ethic and community spirit.
It’s about having a positive impact on the community, Deschenes said, since it’s the communities that give players and coaches the opportunity to play.
“Hopefully we can put together good hockey that people love to watch, and hopefully the community will be excited and get behind us.”
