Seniors Outreach is holding a 50/50 raffle to raise funds for its new residential program.
The nonprofit that improves the lives of seniors in Kelowna is launching a new pilot home escort program this summer that will offer more flexibility to seniors struggling to find affordable housing. Seniors Outreach believes that shared flats are a crucial part of the solution to problems related to high housing costs and social isolation for both homeowners and potential renters.
Seniors Outreach and Resource Center offers several housing initiatives through its regional housing program, including the services of a social worker who assists seniors in finding accommodation and acts as an advocate and emotional resource for them. The social worker navigates through the system and helps seniors through housing options such as affordable or low-income housing, assisted living, supportive housing and long-term care.
Group Executive Director Vi Sorensen says this program is a necessity in the community.
“People need to be accommodated, and the worry of moving and finding a home is overwhelming. Affordability has gone through the roof and seniors in their seventies, eighties, and even nineties are being evicted as landlords sell their homes in this hot housing market. These vulnerable people have difficulties because they are on the verge of homelessness. “
Sorensen also says that situations like an eviction or the need to find a home quickly can cause stress and anxiety in seniors.
If you’d like to help, you can volunteer, donate, or buy a 50/50 lot by clicking here. The raffle winner keeps half of the jackpot while the charity keeps the other half. The closing date for entries is July 13th.
