A second COVID-19 outbreak at Kelowna General Hospital.

Interior Health announced in a media release today, March 31st, that the second COVID-19 outbreak is occurring in Division 4E of the hospital.

One patient and one employee tested positive for COVID-19.

An investigation is ongoing and all patients with COVID-19 will be moved to the COVID department, Interior Health said.

An outbreak is underway in the hospital’s 5B unit. Five patients and five staff were infected and one death is associated with the outbreak.

There is no evidence of transmission of COVID-19 to other areas of the hospital, and the new 4E outbreak does not appear to be related to 5E, Interior Health said.

There are outbreak control measures in place and a team of infection control and communicable disease specialists, as well as clinical staff and KGH leaders, meet daily to contain the outbreak.

IH said the hospital will remain safe for appointments and emergency care.

The health authority continues to encourage residents to follow COVID-19 safety measures, including frequent hand washing, wearing a mask, physical distancing, avoiding physical gatherings, and staying in household bladders.

Online COVID-19 tests can be booked using the COVID-19 test booking form or by calling 1-877-740-7747.
