Okanagan skaters urged to stay away from the ice
In warmer weather, frozen lakes become weaker
In warmer weather, outdoor enthusiasts are at risk.
Those thinking of venturing out onto frozen lakes are urged to reconsider as the mercury has risen.
“Ice that was thick yesterday may be at the break point today,” the Lake Country District warns residents. “The changing weather conditions make the ice on lakes and ponds unpredictable. Do not put yourself or the firefighters helping with emergency assistance and ice rescue at risk. “
Hundreds of people were out and about on Lakes Wood, Duck (Ellison), Kalamalka, Okanagan and Swan in northern Okanagan during the long Family Day weekend.
But the temperature is warming up, and Vernon will hit highs of 4, 5, and 6 degrees Celsius for the week, according to Environment Canada.
