A new subsidized housing development in Kelowna has welcomed new residents for a month.

Rents for the new 40-unit project near the corner of Cawston Avenue and Gordon Drive range from $ 375 to $ 1,835 per month, depending on the size of the unit and the income of the tenants.

The development is being carried out by the NOW Canada Society, and the new homes are primarily intended for women, single parents, and the elderly.

“NOW Canada is excited to work with all levels of government to create more affordable housing for Kelowna residents,” said Liz Talbott, executive director of the NOW Canada Society. “This is another step forward to address the lack of affordable housing for people with low to middle incomes in our region.”

The province provided $ 4 million in grants to build the subsidized housing estate and will provide an additional $ 204,000 annually for operating expenses.

The City of Kelowna helped reduce development costs for the project by $ 33,000.

“Affordable housing projects like this make a huge difference to many people in our community,” said Colin Basran, Kelowna mayor. “In this case, 40 different individuals and families will have access to an affordable home.”

Funding for the province came from the Community Housing Fund, a $ 7 billion 10-year housing plan that provides more than 14,000 rental units for low- and middle-income families. More than 8,800 of these homes have been built, are under construction, or are under development in the province.
