Metropolis of Kelowna seeking to “modernize” its enterprise licensing system

On Monday, Kelowna City Council will be considering several changes to its business license application and renewal.

According to Greg Wise, Business License Manager for the City of Kelowna, the current system has received only minor updates since it was first implemented over 20 years ago.

The city of Kelowna is proposing several updates, including a $ 25 fee for new applicants and a $ 25 fee for businesses that fail to meet the annual renewal deadline.

These new fees correspond to comparable cities. Vancouver charges a registration fee of $ 58 while Vernon charges between $ 25 and $ 100.

The City of Kelowna will also categorize nearly 1,900 unclassified licenses into more specific categories.

“These changes are the first step in modernizing our business licensing system,” said Wise.

“We assume that we will switch to a new online platform in the fall that will enable much simpler functions such as e-billing options, online application and payment and more.

There are currently approximately 9,500 active business licenses registered in Kelowna.
