The City of Kelowna has issued a snow event advisory.

It comes after significant overnight snowfall that has continued this morning, with more on the way throughout the day.

<p dir=As a result, a temporary parking ban is now in effect for snow routes, which include:

  • Academy Way
  • BlackMountain
  • Clifton/Magic Estates/Wilden
  • Dilworth Mountain
  • Kirschner Mountain
  • McKinley Beach
  • Areas in the South Mission, including The Ponds

The City says that residents parked on the street in those areas will have 24 hours to find alternative off-street parking before enforcement begins.

“Residents are asked to be patient as crews will be focusing on clearing roadways and laying sand on priority one and two routes before attending to local roads in neighborhoods,” said Andrew Schwerdtfeger, roadways operations manager.

“Residents not living on a snow route are still encouraged to move their vehicles off the road to help plows clear the snow from curb to curb safely and quickly.”

Municipal roads will be cleared of snow and de-iced based on their priority status, with high-traffic roads like Gordon Drive, Rutland Road, Glenmore Road and Lakeshore Road tackled first.

Priority two roads include Richter Street, bus routes, school zones and emergency vehicle stations. Priority three and four roads include other residential streets.

Hwy 97 and Hwy 33 are both maintained by the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Residents and business owners are responsible for clearing the snow off sidewalks adjacent to their property.

The City is encouraging people to step up and help out if they have neighbors who are unable to clear their own properties, particularly seniors and those with an injury or disability.
