Additional rental units will be put into operation after the city council approved two development projects on Monday afternoon.

The two housing projects will offer 72 rental units at different ends of the city.

A planned 44-unit, six-story apartment in the Glenmore Village Center on Valley Road was unanimously supported.

The proposed apartment would be operated by Freedom’s Door and, if an application for funding from BC Housing is successful, the building would offer subsidized housing.

Planner Jocelyn Black stated that the project would be on “an irregularly shaped lot”, but development was possible in the northern part.

The project is located near commercial properties, schools and parks and is well supported by the transit, according to Black.

The second apartment is a five-story, 28-unit condominium on Pacific Avenue in downtown Capri-Landmark.

Black told the council that two lots would be consolidated to make room for the apartment.

And while future land use is mixed for the area, she stated that the apartment would only house residential units.

She says advertising is only required on collecting and arterial roads. Pacific Avenue is designated as a local street.

However, at Coun’s urging, the staff had proposed that the public hearing not take place. Brad Seven, that provision has been removed from the motion.

“I know this is an area where we’ve had significant input and discussion in the community,” said Sieben.

“I would prefer if I continue but still have the public hearing.
