The Central Okanagan Food Bank has received a huge boost thanks to the generosity of the skiers and boarders and the Big White Ski Resort.

Last month, participants in Big White’s TELUS Snowcross Challenge donated $ 23,650 to the local grocery bank, and the ski resort added an additional $ 15,000 to the pot.

“This year was about keeping things local, so it only made sense for us to support the local community through the Central Okanagan Food Bank,” said Michael J. Ballingall, vice president, Big White.

“We are so proud to be part of a community that rose to the challenge and easily surpassed it. Thank you to everyone who donated during the campaign and donate to the food bank at any time of the year. “

Demand at the local food bank has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, demand has increased 23 percent since January this year.

The $ 38,650 donation goes to the food bank’s nutritional improvement program, which supplies seasonal produce, meat, dairy, eggs and weekly children’s snack packages to households in need in the area.

“As a service aid to two communities, we’re seeing firsthand the financial burden and impact the pandemic has had on so many people,” said Trevor Moss, CEO of Central Okanagan Food Bank.

“When we support each other in a time of so much uncertainty and uncertainty, families can have house meals and dinner on the table, and everyone can be proud of that.”

The food bank recently played a role in helping some members of the Big White community. Between March 5 and April 9, the food bank sent 38 food baskets to Big White employees who were self-isolating due to COVID-19.

“Special thanks to the Big White Community Development Association, who worked closely with the grocery bank to manage a delivery service so that those in self-isolation can get the food they need without leaving their homes,” Big said White in a statement.
