More than half a ton, or 660 kilograms, of trash recently left beside a popular Kelowna road is just the tip of a growing heap of trash being dumped in the area, according to the Okanagan Forest Task Force.

The 660 kilograms of garbage were thrown away by just two people who had settled along Beaver Lake Road for about a week and a half.

“We knew where they were and were informed (by the campers) that we were not going to leave a mess. But you are promised the stars and the moon,” Task Force President Kane Blake told iNFOnews.ca.

He says they found some IDs in the trash, as well as clothing, DVDs, cutlery, and pots and pans, “all sorts of things.”

The campers were male and female, and Blake believes they were in their early 30s.

He says RCMP took care of the scene during the cleanup on Sunday March 21, collecting items including IDs found.

Blake told iNFOnews.ca that the amount of rubbish dumped in the area between Peachland and Vernon has increased over the past two years.

“Certain places are really bad. We’re just starting to see more rubbish, in general we show up … (We see) all kinds of things, whether it’s cars, household rubbish, or garden waste,” Blake said since September 2016, his agency has been gained over 300,000 pounds or over 136,000 kilograms.

“It’s really disturbing to know that so much rubbish is dumped in our hinterland all the time. This hinterland is for all of us. We all like to go into the bush and it’s a shame that some ruin it for others. It’s really disgusting. ”
