A West Kelowna man accused of killing his wife died before his case could be brought to justice.

Kevin Costin, 60, died on February 3 at Victoria General Hospital after an obituary that did not disclose the cause of death.

Costin was on trial for second degree murder related to the death of his wife, 37-year-old Hazel Budiongan, in 2015. The Crown claimed Costin killed Budiongan before setting fire to her West Kelowna home while her body was still inside.

The start of his trial had been delayed several times due to the pandemic. During this time he was on bail.

On May 3, 2021, he should finally be brought to court with the selection of the jury.

A British Columbia prosecutor’s spokesman declined to comment on the status of the case.
