Letter: Boyce Gyro: Let’s keep the public space

I urge you to change your philosophy and direction, please, and keep the property of the city

To the mayor and the council:

I am writing to you again on this matter because I believe that it is really in the public interest that the current property of the city be preserved for long-term use by the citizens and visitors of our city.

We have been very fortunate that so many people have decided to move to Kelowna, and over the years the councils have allowed replenishment and densification. The impact of this growth will require the city to retain real estate and actually expand these areas, including key hangouts like Gyro Park, with better access and associated parking. This is the key for all ages.

Please note that the Gyro Park has been very busy in the last few weeks despite the extremely high water and the changeable weather and the existing south-facing parking lot is almost always full. That’s good news. People are leaving their homes and condominiums and enjoying the very qualities we promote for our city.

The complete loss of the surrounding property on the other side of Lakeshore Road for parking in Gyro Park underscores the need to increase parking capacity at the north end of Watt Road and Lakeshore Road.

I urge you to change your philosophy and direction, please, and keep the property of the city. Let’s show the community that the city encourages family activities in this central area of our city.
