A home caught fire in Lake Country Saturday night.

UPDATE: 9:40am

A neighbor first noticed flames coming from the home on Lake Country’s Chase Road just before 10 pm, before he ran to the home to ensure no one was inside.

Michal Wojciechowska worked as a firefighter in Poland before moving to Canada 14 years ago, and his instincts kicked in when he noticed flames coming from his next-door neighbors’ home.

“I ran immediately over there because I am an ex-firefighter … [I noticed] flames from the far left corner of the house, from the bedroom,” Wojciechowska said.

“I opened the front door but I saw the amount of smoke that was there and I was afraid to go in … I started grabbing rocks and smashing the bedroom windows and I tried calling to people, ‘Is anybody there?’ But there was no answer from anyone.”

Wojciechowska and another neighbor who had arrived on the scene, tried to get inside the backdoor as well to search for any occupants. But when he noticed a propane tank near the flames, he moved away from the fire. The Lake Country Fire Department arrived a few minutes later.

“That was my first action after a 14-year break, because I was working as a firefighter until the last day in Poland,” Wojciechowska said. “My blood was boiling when I saw [the fire].”

Wojciechowska’s family only just moved to Lake Country in the summer, and he says he didn’t know the people who lived at the home. But he has seen people living there over the past few months.
