The Lake Country Fire Department was called to a house on Granite Road late Thursday evening when it was found to be a small fire inside the walls behind a gas fireplace.

Fire Chief Steve Windsor says it appears that for some reason the gas fireplace did not turn off when it reached the desired temperature.

“The homeowners smelled smoke but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from at first,” said Windsor.

Finally, he said the homeowner called the fire department when the smell intensified.

“The fire was creeping up behind the coat, so we had to take the coat and decorative materials off the wall,” he said.

Windsor suspects the fire smoldered for a while before the fire department arrived.

He estimated the damage at around $ 15,000.
