KELOWNA, BC – Brain surgery at Kelowna General Hospital just got safer with the addition of a neural navigation device, the Stryker Navigation 3i.

“It’s a machine that helps surgeons perform brain operations with surgical accuracy,” says Dr. Gary Goplen, neurosurgeon and head of surgery at KGH.

KGH is currently renting a model of the device, but the latest edition is on the way thanks to a $ 100,000 donation from the Kelowna Rotary Club.

“The Rotary volunteers do it; It’s a work of love, “said Bill Redmond, chairman of the Kelowna Rotary Pro-Am Golf Tournament.” It’s really the generosity and kindness of our sponsors and this whole community that are supporting this cause that we should really thank. “

Funds raised through the KGH Foundation’s Be a Lifesaver Capital Campaign pay the remainder of the $ 210,000 price for the neural navigation tool.

Kelowna real estate agent Lucas Jackson knows firsthand the amazing results of the operation with the device. He suffered a major stroke on March 25th from a collection of abnormal blood vessels in his brain and is thanks to the guided hand of Dr. Goplen almost completely recovered.

“Physically, I’m 100% back,” says Jackson, 31. “I’ve been training for a few weeks. I can move everything, I can play catch with my son.”
