A long-standing company in Kelowna does not close its doors without a fight.

Taco Time, on the corner of Highway 97 and Leckie Road, has launched a social media campaign in response to news that the location will soon be a Starbucks.

“Is a cup of coffee worth more than 40 years of tacos?” Read a campaign video.

In June, Kelowna City Council approved a building permit that paved the way for Starbucks to overhaul the corner lot.

When it opens, it will be the 15th Starbucks franchise in Kelowna.

<p dir=However, the owners of Taco Time have gone public with a petition saying they will be forced out.

“Never missed a rental payment and always been a great tenant,” says the petition.

“But overnight there was a termination clause in the lease that the property management tried to enforce. What does that mean? Well, for someone who has been in this place for 40 years, that means going out there so they can demolish the building and replace it with a planned StarBucks. “

The petition continues: “Longstanding companies deserve more than a pat on the back and a kick in the buttocks of companies that are not part of your community.”

By Wednesday afternoon, the petition had collected nearly 700 signatures.
