Taco Time ended with a crisis – a traffic crisis.

Cars snaked around the Dilworth mall parking lot today, waiting for their final burrito combo and showing support for the business that has been there for 40 years.

A woman waiting in the store for her last lunch at Dilworth Taco Time said people were lined up way outside the building and the man in front of her ordered 17 burritos.

Only one was hot enough to eat on the spot. The rest were saved.

Taco Time on Dilworth will close on Tuesday May 11th after a long battle to keep the lease and doors open.

Owner Ray Heathcote was involved in a lawsuit with a Vancouver-based landlord who wanted the building to be acquired by a Starbucks.

In July 2019, Heathcote launched a website trying to raise funds and he got a ton of it for what it was worth. At that time he asked, “Is a cup of coffee worth 40 years of tacos?” and launched a petition to sway the city council to consider measures that would prevent the store from being demolished and replaced with a Starbucks. He also went to court.

The legal matter is not fully resolved yet, but Heathcote said it did not renew the lease, which resulted in the immediate closure.

“We’ve been here for 40 years and we’ve been the best and it’s been a very successful business and I’m sorry it didn’t work out on the leasing side,” he said.

While the place might not last another year, that doesn’t mean Heathcote’s Taco Time will leave town forever.

He said he is currently looking for new places.
