Countless events and festivals have been canceled due to COVID-19, but one festival is planning to continue as planned after months of delay.

The coronavirus won’t take away Kelowna’s pride.

“It’s been a difficult year, and while COVID-19 has presented unique challenges, we were determined to find a way to mark Kelowna Pride Week 2020 in a safe, inclusive and solemn way,” said Dustyn Baulkham, general the Kelowna Pride Society Manager.

The Kelowna Pride Society said the staff monitored, planned, rescheduled and worked to ensure that Pride week remains an official part of Kelowna’s 2020 collective calendar.

With Kelowna’s Pride Week on the horizon, organizers hope that people will come together for an “inclusive and safe celebration”.

“The board has worked really hard to find responsible ways to bring the community together,” said Baulkham.

“I am proud that we have created some special events that will ensure we can celebrate Kelowna Pride Week 2020 while still keeping this moment in history in mind.”

The festival runs from September 18-27 and features a variety of online and in-person events.

“There will be three parades this year. In a historic premiere for Kelowna, there will be a Pedal Parade (bicycle) on September 22, a water parade (human-powered watercraft) on September 23, and a vehicle parade on September 24, ”Baulkham wrote in a press release.

Organizers said to improve accessibility a number of events will be streamed live online.

Following last year’s Pride celebration, which was Kelowna’s largest to date, Pride Week 2020 has been postponed from its original dates in June due to the pandemic.

The organizers hope that people will feel safe enough to go ahead and participate.
