Two dragons leave the Dragons’ Den, including Lane Merrifield, co-creator of Club Penguin in Kelowna.
The co-creator of the online social network for children is leaving the CBC television show to spend a sabbatical year enjoying some time and travel adventures with his family, according to an announcement from CBC. Merrifield originally joined the Dragons in 2018.
The announcement came shortly after the sale of FreshGrade, a digital portfolio and assessment platform used by teachers across Canada, to a California company for $ 30 million.

“From building a safe digital world at Club Penguin to capturing learning with FreshGrade, my endeavors have always been inspired by my kids,” Lane said in the announcement. “Now that I’m leaving my newest company and my two children are preparing to leave home for school this fall, it’s time to enjoy this season with them. I am grateful for my experience on the show and look forward to the many adventures to come. ”
The new dragon Wes Hall, founder and executive chairman of Kingsdale Advisors and founder and chairman of the BlackNorth Initiative, comes on board for the show’s 16th season.
Hall joins Arlene Dickinson, Michele Romanow, Manjit Minhas and Vincenzo Guzzo as longtime dragons Jim Treliving and Merrifield depart.
After 15 seasons, Treliving plans to focus on his role as chairman of Boston Pizza International and remain active in his other duties as a management consultant, investor, entrepreneur and committed philanthropist.
