Prepping for new rec center

The City of Kelowna continues to move forward with plans to replace the aging Parkinson Rec Centre, several months before the public is asked to weigh in on the project.
The city this week issued an advance notice of future competitive opportunity for what will be, if given assent by the voters, the richest project ever undertaken by the city.
Dubbed the ‘Kelowna Community Campus,’ the rec center replacement was estimated to cost at least $155 million when council approved the site next to the Apple Bowl back in the spring.
The competitive opportunity notice outlined as a replacement for the aging, and undersized Parkinson Rec Centre.
“The city is looking to replace this facility with approximately triple the square footage and that facility is to include a 10-lane pool and three gymnasiums’, among other amenities,” the opportunity stated.
Bidding closes Nov 22.
The design process is now underground.
Staff expect to have a definitive cost estimate for the facility in the spring, at which time the city is expected to seek voter approval to borrow the necessary funds through an Alternative Approval Process.
