Kelowna’s fields will soon be filled with residents returning to their summer sports leagues.

Urban Rec’s soccer and 2-pitch leagues begin this week in private facilities, said Jamie Taverner, managing partner of Urban Rec.

The local recreational sports organization is currently awaiting approval from the city and Okanagan College for beach volleyball, which it hopes will begin the week of June 20, she said.

With the new COVID-19 protocols, the leagues will look a little different.

For 2-pitch procedures, these procedures include, but are not limited to: keeping a distance of two meters from each other, using hand sanitizer before and after games, not gathering after the games, not using the shelters with teams that line up outside their correct distance , no warm-ups, no high fives, and no team huddles. The catcher stands two meters behind the bat.

All indoor urban rec sports were canceled until September.

The city of Kelowna has kicked off summer beach volleyball, pickleball, slo-pitch softball and tennis, according to a recent newsletter. These leagues are expected to start on July 5th. Registration for summer programs has also opened in the city.

The Slo Pitch Leagues are also starting, and Slo Pitch National organizers will kick off the game in July. Softball BC also unveiled its return-to-play plans.

The smaller local leagues can start earlier than larger organizations because they don’t have to go through the province for approval, Taverner said.
