Fire in the Kelowna retirement home displaces 46 residents

The cause of the fire is currently unclear, but is not classified as suspicious

A fire at Mission Wood Retirement Resort in Kelowna on Friday, May 21, displaced 46 residents and affected 41 units of the building.

At 3:15 p.m., the Kelowna Fire Department Dispatch Center received several reports of black smoke coming from a balcony on the first floor.

The first officer to arrive at the scene reported flames and smoke from a ground floor unit at the rear of the building, which then moved up the outside of the building to the fourth floor.

Firefighters attacked the flames and quickly put out the fire from the outside, even though the fire had already broken through several windows in the units on the first and second floors, causing fire damage inside. One man was treated locally for smoke inhalation.

The building’s sprinklers had triggered and caused water damage on all affected floors.

Mission Wood Retirement Resort organizes accommodations for displaced tenants.

The cause of the fire is currently unclear and is being investigated by both the Kelowna Fire Department and RCMP investigators, although the fire was not suspicious.
