(UPDATE: October 23 @ 4:20 pm) – The city of Kelowna is doubling its prior warning of falling branches and trees.
City officials have now closed the tunnel under the WR Bennett Bridge and are urging people to avoid the city park.
“We are seeing a number of branches in the city park due to today’s heavy, wet snow,” said Blair Stewart, park operator.
“We ask pedestrians and cyclists to stay outside the city park until the snow melts.”
Stewart added that the tunnel will be reopened as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.
(Original story: October 23 at 3:25 p.m.) – Yes, we are used to snowing in the Okanagan, but it doesn’t happen often that so much falls in October.
As a result, the City of Kelowna is urging residents to avoid park and path use today as the safety risk is increased from falling branches and trees.
“Sorry for Kelowna’s treetops today,” tweeted Matt Worona from town. “It’s pretty bad with this early snowfall.”

Residents should also be careful when walking on sidewalks with overhanging branches.
“Many of our trees still have autumn leaves, which in conjunction with heavy, wet snowfall can pose a safety problem,” says Tara Bergeson, urban forest engineer.
“Due to the increased risk of cutting down trees or branches, we urgently recommend residents not to use parks and paths today until the snow melts.”
Anyone who sees a tree that has become a security hazard can report it to 250-469-8503 during city business hours.
After closing time, you should submit a parking maintenance request online.
