Kelowna resident spends 10 days with Freedom Convoy in Ottawa

Kelowna’s Matthias Krohn would now be arrested and found for doing something he’s been doing the past 10 days at the Freedom Convoy in Ottawa.

“I volunteered all last week to bring diesel to truckers to keep their trucks going,” said Krohn.

“And then I heard this morning that Ottawa police will arrest and fine anyone doing that. I’m disappointed in the actions of the police. It’s a peaceful demonstration and it shouldn’t be illegal to bring supplies to the truckers and protestors.”

The new police warning also extends to possible arrest and fine for anyone bringing items of any kind to demonstrators.

That could put a serious dent in how the Freedom Convoy has been operating in Ottawa for the past 10 days.

It has relied on fellow truckers and supporters like Krohn, as well as Ottawa residents and businesses to bring in fuel for trucks and food and drink fuel for demonstrators.

This recent police action is just the latest in a long list of how the tide is turning in Ottawa, according to Krohn.

“Both the first and second weekends of protests were amazing with lots of people and lots of positive energy,” he said.

“But the government and the police are bringing out their dirty tactics and making rules that don’t make sense, especially when it’s a peaceful demonstration.”

Ontario Superior Court has just imposed an injunction on truckers honking their horns in downtown Ottawa.

The City of Ottawa has declared a state of emergency in an effort to force the Freedom Convoy out of town.

Several federal cabinet ministers held a news conference this afternoon to float ideas for ending the demonstrations.

And federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to get involved to end the “convoy crisis that is terrorizing neighborhoods across the country.”
Trudeau has vowed not to meet with protestors because he feels they are a small minority with unacceptable views.

Those Freedom Convoy views are an end to all pandemic mandates and restrictions as COVID weakens and becomes endemic.

New interim federal Conservative leader Candice Bergen supports the Freedom Convoy’s demands and has called on Trudeau to get involved and bring about a peaceful solution.

Krohn and his wife drove from Kelowna to Ottawa in their Ford F-350 pick-up behind the main Freedom Convoy of hundreds of big-rigs and other vehicles.

The couple slept in their truck the first night in Ottawa Jan. 28, then found a hotel on the outskirts of the city for the second night and finally a room at the Marriott hotel in downtown Ottawa for the last eight nights.

“We attended the big demonstrations on the weekends, volunteered during the weekdays and also heard the speeches everyday at noon. What it comes down to is I believe in freedom of choice. That’s why I drove across the country to support the Freedom Convoy.”

This morning, Krohn left Ottawa to drive back to Kelowna.

Other protestors say they’re staying in Ottawa until there’s a clear plan for the dropping of all pandemic mandates and restrictions.
