Century 21 has suspended a real estate agent in Kelowna over comments he posted on Facebook about Alberta.
Screenshots of Ben Houghton’s now-gone Facebook page are still circulating the site. One features a comment from Houghton that says, “Alberta, such crying babies … don’t worry Alberta, your greed will soon be back in full swing.”
Albertanian Ryan Bayrack replied to Houghton, saying, “I’ll make sure none of our provinces will buy houses in the Okanagan from you.”
Century 21 Assurance Ltd then posted Houghton’s suspension on its Facebook page.
“Yesterday, Ben Houghton, a realtor for our firm, made negative comments about Albertans. We wholeheartedly disagree with what has been said about our fellow Canadians. We are strong supporters of our many Alberta friends, customers, and family. Alberta was an economic engine for our country. We sympathize with the Albertans about the current economic climate and appreciate their perspective. Our broker suspended Mr. Houghton and he is no longer a registered broker with our firm. “
However, Century 21’s Facebook page also appears to have been deleted or not currently available.
Bayrack went back to Facebook after the announcement to thank Century 21 for handling the situation.
“Century 21 did the right thing on behalf of all Albertans to fire Ben Houghton,” he said.
“You handled the whole situation very professionally and without hesitation. Please ensure that in this difficult situation they get the recognition they deserve. Thanks again to everyone and to Century 21 for supporting your neighbors who are very seriously injured right now. “
