Kelowna RCMP service dog Jak gets his man

Multiple charges are pending against the suspect

RCMP service dog Jak helped grab a man who was threatening two people with a knife at a Kelowna store.

Officers were called to Block 2000 of Enterprise Way around 7 a.m. on January 26 after employees confronted a man for stealing items from a truck. The man then walked away. Officers, assisted by Jak and his handler, searched the area and arrested the suspect without incident. During the investigation, officers found a loaded gun.

Kole Charlton, 29, faces multiple charges including:

•Theft under $5000.00

• Attack with a weapon

•Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

•Possession of a weapon with knowledge of the unauthorized person

• Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition

•Unlawful possession of a firearm x2

• Failing to comply with probation order x6

•Failure to comply with release order

• Possession of a controlled substance

“Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident,” said Cpl. Tammy Lobb, Kelowna Regional RCMP Media Officer. “We appreciate that staff called us immediately and our officers were able to respond and take the suspect safely into custody as incidents like this can be unpredictable.”
