As the weather warms up, gas-powered toys are again burning rubber and with them come complaints from the public that some of these toys are just too noisy.

Kelowna RCMP Traffic Services reminds motorists that modifications to vehicles that result in the removal, partial or total bypassing of the muffler, or the addition of a device that increases noise or creates flames, are prohibited.

The provisions of the BRITISH COLUMBIA MOTOR VEHICLE ACT (MVAR) state:

7.03 (1) A motor vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine must be equipped with an exhaust silencer, which consists of a series of pipes or chambers that ensure that the exhaust gases from the engine are cooled and expelled without excessive noise.

Shutdowns prohibited (2) Nobody may drive or operate a motor vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine if the silencer with which the vehicle is equipped is switched off or disconnected from the engine.

Part removal prohibited (3) Nobody is allowed to drive or operate a motor vehicle that is powered by an internal combustion engine equipped with a silencer from which a baffle plate or other part has been removed.

Modification prohibited (4) Nobody is allowed to drive or operate a motor vehicle that is powered by an internal combustion engine equipped with a silencer, the exhaust of which has been opened or expanded.

Noise increase or flames prohibited (5) Nobody is allowed to drive or operate a motor vehicle that is powered by an internal combustion engine equipped with a silencer or an exhaust system to which a device is attached to the noise of the emission of gases from the engine or increased allows a flame to be expelled from the exhaust system.

Inspection orders can also be placed. If the defect is not repaired or rectified, the registered owner will not be able to reinsure the vehicle
