Kelowna RCMP recovers ‘Mona Lisa’
A local company had a replica of the Mona Lisa stolen from their store last month
Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911.
When it was found two years later, people reportedly wept in the streets.
While the owner of a downtown Kelowna store that has had its own Mona Lisa replica stolen may not cry, they are grateful that the RCMP was able to find and return the painting.
The company reported the stolen painting on November 20. The security footage gave RCMP a picture of suspects to look out for.
On November 25, two officers were walking downtown on foot when they discovered a man who matched the suspect’s description. The man admitted he was in possession of the painting, which officials subsequently confiscated and returned to its rightful owner.
“In this particular case, the return of the painting was more valuable to the owner than the prosecution,” says Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy from the Kelowna RCMP.
The Mona Lisa was valued at $ 100 million in 1962 – nearly $ 900 million today. While the replica may not be worth quite that much, it has significant sentimental value to the owner and employees of the company, the RCMP said.
