Police are investigating racially motivated graffiti left on the Kelowna commercial building and sidewalk on Saturday.

RCMP was called to Glenmore Road by the owner on Saturday morning after an unknown suspect sprayed the area with graffiti.

“The pictures and words that were sprayed in this incident are of a racist nature,” Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy said in a press release. “Hate crimes and hate-motivated criminal activity have no place in our community and our officials are diligently working to identify this suspect.”

The official’s investigation revealed that the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. and was committed by a man in a mask and dark clothing.

“This type of hateful vandalism is taken very seriously by the police and the City of Kelowna,” added Mayor Colin Basran.

“On behalf of the entire community, I express our dismay at this disgusting display of ignorance. This heinous act, however, gives us an opportunity to all stand together and show that a small-minded person with a container of spray paint does not represent our community. “

The RCMP and Kelowna City Council on Wednesday opened two investigations into a Halloween display featuring a Confederate flag and a figure hanging from a noose in a local home. The flag was removed from the display from Friday.

RCMP encourages anyone with additional information about the graffiti to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300. Or stay completely anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or posting a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net
