Historically, City Park has always been the crown jewel of Kelowna’s parks.

“When the city was incorporated in 1905, the then city council took 80 percent of its budget for the first year and bought that land,” said Andrew Gibbs, project manager for the city of Kelowna

But according to the city’s mayor, the crown jewel has been a bit neglected lately.

“Because of our infrastructure deficit, we haven’t been able to revitalize it as much as we’d like,” said Colin Basran.

“We’re going to take the existing brick walkway between the Hot Sands Washroom and Cold Sands Washroom and replace it with a wider, smoother concrete surface and realign it to give more people better access to the park,” said Gibbs.

The city expects $ 2.1 million to replace the old path.

“It’s time to bring it up to modern city standards that we can be proud of,” said Basran.

The city has already had to complete a so-called “Beach Food Project” that was moving sand from the southern end of Hot Sands back to the northern end as it had been removed after years of flood erosion.

“Right now there is a lonely willow tree that holds this coast together. The idea is to keep that up but build some kind of circular pier around it so you can get into the water, ”Gibbs said.
